Carbon offsetting

Reducing emissions of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases made to compensate for, or offset, an emission made elsewhere. It involves calculating GHGs emitted from certain activities, and then paying for those emissions through donating money to a project that will reduce emissions by an equivalent amount (see CDM). Carbon offsets are measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2e) and may represent one of the six primary categories of GHGs (see GHGs). One carbon offset means reducing one metric ton of CO2 or its equivalent in other GHGs.
