International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives/Local Governments for Sustainability. An international association of local governments, including national and regional local government organizations, that have made a commitment to sustainable development. ICLEI was founded in 1990, and is now the leading network of over 1000 cities, towns and metropolies committed to building a sustainable future. ICLEI provides technical consulting, training, and information to enhance capacity building, share knowledge, and support local governments in implementing sustainable development at the local level. ICLEI has been an observer organization in UNFCCC negotiations since 1995. It acts as the focal point of Local Governments and Municipal Authorities (LGMA) constituency, coordinating local government observers.
