Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice. One of two permanent subsidiary bodies to the UNFCCC, created by the COP/CMP. The SBSTA supports the work of the COP and the CMP by providing timely information and advice on scientific and technological matters as related to the Convention or its Kyoto Protocol. It serves as a link between the scientific information provided by expert sources (such as the IPCC) and needs of the COP in setting policy. Key areas of work include impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change; emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries; development and transfer of environmentally-sound technologies; and technical work to improve the guidelines for preparing and reviewing GHG emission inventories from Annex I countries.
