Sink

Any process, activity or mechanism that removes a greenhouse gas (GHG), a precursor of a GHG or an aerosol (e.g. smoke, fog, dust and air pollutants) from the atmosphere. Sinks include forests and other vegetation since they remove carbon dioxide (CO2) through photosynthesis. Other natural sinks include the oceans that absorb CO2 through physicochemical and biological processes. Artifical sinks are usually smaller than natural sinks and include landfills and technologies proposed under Carbon Capture and Storage. (see also GHGs, Mitigation, LULUCF and CCS)
